The Be Fire Free for Fox Sake campaign was created by the Catalina Island Conservancy to educate the public about wildfire prevention and its impact on the island’s fragile ecosystem—particularly the endangered Catalina Island fox. As the Conservancy’s Web and Graphics Specialist, I led the campaign’s visual direction, developing a cohesive identity that combined education, conservation, and fun community engagement.

This initiative culminated in a public launch event introducing the Conservancy’s new wildfire-safety mascot, which I helped promote through a full suite of print and digital materials.

The Challenge

Catalina Island’s landscapes face increasing wildfire risks due to tourism and dry-season conditions. The campaign needed to communicate fire safety in a way that was memorable, family-friendly, and visually consistent across educational, event, and environmental contexts.

Design Concept

The visual system for Be Fire Free for Fox Sake is built around bold, approachable illustrations and a warm, natural color palette that reflects Catalina’s landscape. I began by creating a custom suite of fire-safety icons designed for immediate readability across all audiences. These icons became the core of the campaign and were used consistently across print, digital, and on-site educational materials.

For the mascot launch, I expanded the system into a full range of event materials, including posters, flyers, banners, directional signage, and family-friendly handouts. The tone was intentionally fun and welcoming to encourage participation while still communicating essential safety messages.

Together, the icons, illustrations, and event graphics formed a cohesive, flexible design system that could scale across multiple mediums while keeping the campaign recognizable and engaging.

Outcome

The Be Fire Free for Fox Sake campaign helped unify the Conservancy’s wildfire safety messaging across departments and platforms. The mascot launch boosted engagement with families and visitors, making fire safety both memorable and approachable.

Staff praised the clarity and consistency of the new materials, and the icon suite has since been adopted for future educational content and on-island signage.
